EMDR in Simple Terms

A clear explanation of how the method works and why it helps.

In short

EMDR is a psychotherapy method that helps the brain 'digest' unpleasant events so they stop affecting your life today.

Imagine something bad happened to you. The brain couldn't process it and left the memory 'unpacked'. It lies in an active folder, bleeds, and reminds you of itself every time something similar happens nearby. EMDR helps find this memory, 'disassemble' it, and put it in the archive where it doesn't bother anyone.

A bit more detail, but still simple

When we say 'eye movement reprocessing', it sounds strange. How can eyes heal the soul?

In fact, eyes are just a tool. The method uses so-called bilateral stimulation: alternating stimulation of the left and right hemispheres. This can be done with eyes (following a moving object), ears (listening to sounds in the left and right ear alternately), or the body (tapping on the shoulders).

Such stimulation triggers a natural information processing mechanism. In normal life, this happens during sleep, in the REM phase, when eyes also move rapidly. EMDR does the same, only while awake and under the therapist's control.

What happens during a session?

You sit down, remember what bothers you (or just think about it). The therapist asks you to follow their finger (or pointer) with your eyes — back and forth, like a pendulum. After 20-30 seconds, there's a pause, and you say what changed in your sensations.

And so several times. Gradually, the memory loses its sharpness. What caused tears, fear, or shame at the beginning becomes just a picture without emotions. Fear goes away. Thoughts stop spinning in circles.

What is it like?

Imagine you are looking at an old photo that captured an unpleasant moment. Before, looking at it, you relived the pain. And now you look and think: 'Yes, that happened. Unpleasant, but it's in the past.'

EMDR helps turn trauma into exactly such a photo.

The main thing to remember

EMDR is not magic. It is a scientific method that psychologists learn, that is studied in institutes, and that helps thousands of people worldwide. It doesn't erase memory, it doesn't turn you into another person. It just removes the pain from the past so it doesn't interfere with living today.
